Death Penalty Inhumane, Should Be Abolished

Dr. Rajan Mahtani

Dr. Rajan Lekhraj Mahtani is a noted businessman, philanthropist and charity worker from Zambia. He is not only known for his successful business ventures such as Mahtani Group of Companies and Finsbury Investments, but also for his philanthropic contributions. One of these philanthropic contributions has been Prison Fellowship Zambia (PFZ) established more than three decades ago by Dr. Rajan Lekhraj Mahtani only.

Recently, Dr. Rajan Mahtani extended his support towards the announcement made by the Zambian President. On the occasion of Africa Day, Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema announced his intentions to abolish the death penalty row. Dr. Rajan Mahtani has extended his support towards this decision by stating that the concept of death penalty is degrading, inhumane and cruel and does not provide any solution for the government of Zambia. Dr. Rajan Mahtani praised the decision made by the Zambian President by calling it unwavering, bold and humane, and also said that he believed God is rewarding the people by continuously healing and blessing them.

On a religious point of view, Dr. Rajan Mahtani stated that the death of Jesus Christ on cross paid for the entire sins of the human beings who have faith in him and believed in Jesus Christ. As such, Dr. Rajan Mahtani argues that killing of individuals whose deaths are atoned by ‘Son of God’ is inappropriate and meaningless. While there are several arguments regarding death penalty, Dr. Rajan Lekhraj Mahtani further questions of the main scripture mandate permits or prohibits capital punishment. Dr. Rajan Mahtani further argued that God wanted to make men and women as per his own image and this shows the love of God towards his people. At the same time, the Bible condemns the practice of death penalty and indicated that only those who have not sinned will be qualified for performing the execution.

Based on these arguments, Dr. Rajan Mahtani stated that the decision from the Zambian President to abolish death penalty is a step in the right direction.
