Dr. Mahtani Receives Praise From Students And Fraternity For His Philanthropic Contribution

The award was established in the year 2012 and was given for the first time in the year 2013. Dr. Rajan Lekhraj Mahtani is a noted businessman in Zambia who is also known for his several philanthropic activities. The award has been instituted for honouring late Steven Malama, a distinguished legal professional, bar luminary as well as idol for many graduates and professionals in the legal field. Steven Malama is known for his many achievements in the legal fraternity, one of the major being persuading the government of Zambia to merge two distinct bars which were Barristers Bar and Solicitors Bar into single Bar. This transformation was extremely helpful for legal practitioners in Zambia as they were able to affiliate with the new bar and provide legal services in larger areas.

The Steven Malama award for the year 2018-19 was presented to Emmanuel Bwalya Kaluba. Dr. Rajan Mahtani also wrote a hand-written note to the top graduating student congratulating him for his significant achievements. Dr. Rajan Mahtani was further praised by the student who wrote an article which was later published at the ‘Reader’s Forum’ in the Daily Mail. In this article, Emmanuel praised Dr. Rajan Mahtani for his significant contributions towards education system of Zambia and thanked him and his contributions for recognising the achievements, dedication and hard work of the legal professionals in Zambia

The award contributes not only in generating awareness of the importance of legal education in Zambia, but also supports the winning graduate financially. The award carries certification, a plaque and an award money worth K15,000 which has provided significant financial support to students planning for further certification, advanced degrees or skill training. In this manner, Dr. Rajan Mahtani has continued to work for the betterment of the Zambian nation, its society and the education system.
