Dr. Rajan Mahtani recently made news after an interview of him was published at the ‘Mast Newspaper’ which is a leading newspaper of Zambia. In this interview, Dr. Rajan Mahtani praised the recent announcement made by the Zambian President.

On the eve of ‘Africa Day’ President of Zambia made a bold statement that he is planning complete abolishment of the death penalty. According to him, death penalty in a cruel, inhumane and degraded practice which has not positive attributes to the increasing corruption and illegal practices across Zambian nation. Further adding his voice to support the Zambian President’s decision, Dr. Rajan Mahtani stated that at present there are more than 380 inmates in Zambia facing death penalty and among them around 25-3- are women. All of these inmates are already living a life in fear, not knowing their last day on this earth. Dr. Mahtani also said that he has observed several transformations with prisoners dedicating their lives towards the service of the god. All these aspects clearly indicate that death penalty no more makes any sense. Furthermore, Dr. Rajan Mahtani also highlighted that the living conditions across majority of the Zambian prisons is degrading with prisoners devoid of even basic human dignity and fundamental human rights. There is a new initiative by Zambian government, which involves decongestion of the Zambian prisons to improve living conditions of the prisoners. All these factors clearly indicate that the concept of death penalty has become archaic now and should be abolished completely.
