Steven Malama award

To be one of the top businessman of a nation is full of advantages and disadvantages. While the advantages are good business opportunities with networking and reputation, the disadvantages are being constantly targeted by unethical and scrupulous entities for personal benefits. Dr. Rajan Mahtani, in his more than thirty years of business services in Zambia, has faced numerous challenges such as these. Despite these challenges, Dr. Rajan Mahtani has never shied away from contributing towards the benefits of the Zambian economy, society and environment. His contributions can be found in numerous sectors from social work, correctional facilities, environment and education.

One of the most significant contributions by Dr. Rajan Mahtani in the field of education was the institution of Steven Malama award. This award was instituted by Dr. Rajan Mahtani to honor late Steven Malama, a distinguished legal professional, law fraternity, bar luminary and legal philanthropist whose work resulted in significant improvements in the legal framework of Zambia. He is known for persuading the Government of Zambia to merge the Barrister’s Bar and Solicitor’s bar in a single bar so that legal professional and upcoming law graduates in Zambia are able to get affiliation. To honor these contributions, Dr. Rajan Mahtani established the Steven Malama award in the year 2012.

The inaugural award was given in the year 2013 and since then, it was established that the award will be given every year. The winner of this award is the top graduating student from the Zambia Institute of Advanced Legal Education and also has to qualify for the bar in their first attempt. The award for the year 2018-19 was won by Emmanuel Bwalya Kaluba. Emmanuel also won a plaque, a certificate as well as cash prize worth K15,000 which provided him with significant financial assistance. Emmanuel also penned an article thanking Dr. Rajan Mahtani for his significant contribution which was later published at the ‘Readers Forum’ of the daily mail newspaper.
